S4C CHARITY ART SHOW AND AUCTION
I am currently working on curating an art show and auction of skate decks painted by tattoo artists, for Skate4Cancer. The show will open June 17th, at the Hilton, in Toronto.
Titled, "HIGHWAY TO HELL", the show will feature 50 hand painted decks from artists from around the globe.
For those of you that are unfamiliar with Skate4Cancer, we're an organization dedicated to grassroots education and awareness about cancer prevention. Ultimately Skate4Cancer is not about raising money - its about establishing a community of people to spread awareness. S4C founder Rob Dyer has toured the world in the last 5+ years sharing his message of hope and sharing his story. Skate4Cancer has long been affiliated with the music, skateboarding and tattoo communities in North America and abroad, and we're excited to be involved with this great event.
One particular dream Skate4Cancer has had is to open a drop-in centre in Toronto to use as a home-base. Skate4Cancer participated in the Aviva Community Fund challenge at the end of 2009, and despite having garnered enough votes to finish in first place in both the qualifying and semi-final rounds, the final decision was left up to a jury. The jury unfortunately chose not to fund this idea, but as Skate4Cancer always has, we took it as an opportunity to do it ourselves.
All proceeds from the skate deck auction at this year's Northern Ink Xposure International Tattoo Convention in Toronto will go toward helping us build a Skate4Cancer drop-in center somewhere in downtown Toronto. This centre will be the home for Skate4Cancer - a place for our community to congregate; a place for us to hold our events; a place for our education and awareness campaigns to be developed and most importantly a place for people to come to talk, share, grieve and heal.
I first heard about Rob Dyer, some years ago on the radio, as promotion began for his skate from Ontario, Canada, to California. Some years later, I was introduced to him, as he was beginning to dedicate his entire life and body to his cause. Living in the basement of the El Macambo Tavern, with little more than a cot, I could not believe Rob had the strength and drive to invest so much of himself to bringing awareness to his cause. For years, I have wanted to embark upon a Skate4Cancer project. I am excited this time has finally come, and you have agreed to be a part of it too.
I know all too well, the horrors of cancer.
In the summer of 2006, I began my apprenticeship at Way Cool Queen, under Stefan Dewsbury. Come October, he was diagnosed with lung cancer, and on Januray 19, he passed away. I never would have made it to where I am today, had it not been for his support and belief in me. At 18, I watched my father die from pancreatic cancer, after years of battling, surgeries, chemo.. Helpless, as the strongest man I knew, became yellow, frail and meek as a kitten, before his liver failed, and we were told he did not qualify for a transplant. Soon after, my grandmother lost use of her leg to cancer, as several bones had to be removed to ensure the disease didn't spread. She has had to use a walker and a leg brace ever since, constantly suffering from bruising, and abbraassians caused by it. Come this May, it will have been 2 years since my Aunt died from cervical cancer. And come this September, it will have been 2 years, since I had surgery for the very samething.
With 1 in 3 people being diagnosed with cancer these days, I am sure we are all cognizant of this current plague, and the abhorrence it brings with it. My hope is that this project will both cathartic and enligtening for everyone involved.

I hope you can all make it!
